Why is it so intensely moving to see a bunch of people engaged in the same repetitive movements to a piece of music?
Because it displays our innate wish to experience our interdependence and connection to each other... So many traditional folk dances are comprised of long lines of people doing exactly the same repetitive steps to music over a period of time.

Actually I imagine that there are probably hundreds... maybe even thousands of people who are thinking the same thing as you... that is what I mean by think that this could be the spur to an 'Arab Spring' kind of movement. I am sure you will be able to connect with people who are also interested... perhaps even get something in motion yourself. Keep us all informed!

Hi Vivian, I really appreciate you sharing your perspective in this way and also the links you have made with trauma and dissociation in your other blog. One of the most troubling things to me is what I see as the dissociation by most of society from the reality of those who are the most marginalised and dispossessed in our country. We cannot bear to identify in ourselves, or empathise with in others, profound deprivation (in whatever way it manifests) and the reactions it inspires. I guess it requires deep compassion, understanding and courage to include those aspects of ourselves and others that cause intense disruption and distress and to - as you say - find ways to channel that energy constructively and creatively rather than oppressing/repressing it. Our global insistence on defining wealth in material terms, which is so socially divisive, only serves to mask our shared human hunger for an emotional and spiritual wealth that brings greater connection with ourselves and others.

Dear Vivian - I resonate so much with what you have written. It has woken us that a new direction is needed in the way that we live together and share our wealth and troubles. I am interested in how we take this forward - that this is not dropped but as a sure sign that we move forward together. Perhaps a meeting of those of us who are interested in doing so.
