Systemic Constellations work was originally developed in the 1980's by Bert
Hellinger,
a German family systems therapist and philosopher. The various influences that Hellinger
brought together in his development of Constellations included about 20 years as
a priest in the Catholic church, 16 of which he spent as a missionary living and
working with the Zulu peoples in South Africa from whom he learnt about the use of
ritual and an understanding of tribal and ancestral customs; training in psychoanalysis
after he left the church and further investigation and trainings in various modalities
such as Primal Scream, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis followed. Other influences
on the development of the work included: Ivan Boszormenyi-
Hellinger's work has continued to be developed in style and context by many prominent Constellations Facilitators. Hellinger, now in his 80's, continues to travel and work with people all over the world in many diverse cultures. In Germany and many other countries Constellations as a methodology has been taken into the world of organisations and business, proving to be useful in understanding the complex dynamics of larger systems.
Bert Hellinger has visited the UK on a number of occasions to demonstrate his work and support UK practitioners. Family Constellations practice in the UK and Ireland has also been and continues to be supported in particular by Hellinger's colleagues Hunter Beaumont, Albrecht Mahr and Franz Ruppert.
A Brief History
... there is a myth that the soul is ... something personal. When we look objectively... it becomes clear that it is not we who possess a soul but rather a soul which possesses us ... the soul is not there to serve us but rather that we are in the service of the soul. (Hellinger, Systemic Solutions Bulletin 2003)
